First Timer - wheelchair/travel
Hi all: Just found this site today. I am a young 73 and we split our time between here in Connecticut and Germany. I have had OTR since about 1983 or so. So far I have had unpleasant reactions with the "standard" drugs for OTR. Really a bummer since we have to stand in lines a lot when we fly back and forth across "the pond." I saw a posting re: acupuncture that I shall check ou. Just wanted to say hello and will be here quite a bit!!! Jerryt

Hello Jerry,
My name is Betty and I just posted a note to Petra, who lives in Germany. You might be interested in reading it. She was asking about information for her father; as well as drug side effects.
I am so happy you found this site; it will give you information you won't find anywhere else ~ even from neurologists. Most haven't even heard of OT. At least that was my experience.
Now to address your problems with travel. I certainly know, as all of us do, trying to stand in a line is almost impossible. Have you thought of asking for a wheelchair?
You request one from curb to plane and plane to curb. That way, you don't have to stand in lines. It was suggested to me, but I didn't want to use a wheelchair; I was determined to "do it on my own".
Well, I finally gave in, asked for a wheelchair and cannot believe how much easier it makes travel; no lines, no standing, no tremors, and no "freezing". It also makes it easier for my husband.
I don't know if you have experienced that feeling of "freezing" after standing for just a few minutes; have you?
So, the next time you plan to fly 'across the pond', ask for a wheelchair and see what a difference it makes.
Good luck,
Betty in Florida

HI
I always request a wheelchair for travel.
Also if i have to go up steps to get on the plain i take whatever other mreans they have like an elevator or whatever.
Don't fell bad about asking for these things.
Try and make life as comfortable for yourself as possible.
Also less chance of missing your connections with a wheelchair.
They just take you and go.
enjoy your travels

Betty, yes , I have had the feeling of FREEZING-it's awful. Feels like your legs weigh a ton and just won't move right away.
I haven't had to ask for a wheelchair, but I have bought a seat for the shower, because I was afraid to shower when there was no one else home!!! I finally gave in and bought the chair-makes life much safer !
was given a cane, but that is not very helpful at all.
Just started to take Clonazapam, and have just now started upping the dose. it helps a little, but don't think I have been on it long enough to see any real difference. I just hope that I don't have to keep changing the dose. I find if I work around the sleepiness, I'm ok. If I don't do SOMETHING and just sit, I will go right to sleep,so I try to keep busy and try to test it by doing chores that require me to stand.
Good luck to you!
Fran
