Vitamin B

Post by lyndaj »

Hi
I have recently been diagnosed with OT. I have been prescribed clonazepam. This works most of the time but I am not a fan as it makes me slightly dazed and I feel somewhat detached from what is going on. I have hugely increased me levels of fitness and go to the gym 3 - 4 times a week. This has helped dramatically.
However, I am hugely frustrated by the medical community view that nothing can be done. By chance someone told me that they had been prescribed vitamin B for shaky legs. Have trawled the net and there seems to be a view that OT could be linked with a deficency in B12. Does anyone have a view on this - have you heard of this or tried vitamin B injections?
Thanks
Lynda

Hi Lynda,
My original neurologist incorrectly diagnosed me with neuropathy and put me on B12 shots, which I took for many years. They had no effect, so I stopped taking them. My current neurologist, who knows that I have OT, suggested that I start taking them again. So that's what I'm doing, but unfortunately, they really have no effect on my shaky legs.
Wish I had better news.

Hi Lynda
My G P gave me the opportunity to try Vitamin B 12 Injections, as I was so sure it could help. however after several injection s in a short period, followed by one injection every 12 weeks for the next 12 months , i did not find any reduction in my tremors, and agreed that continuation should to be curtailed.
However after hearing a smattering of news regarding B 12 and B6 over the past few weeks I was interested in finding out if there is help after a longer period of injections with the vitamin B 12.
But it appears Rita had the injection for quite some time..........

Regards Maureen

Hi Guys,

I recently spoke with a neurologist who told me that I should make sure that my B12 was on target along with B6. I knew that B12 could cause neurological issues (and mine has been low) but had not heard anything about B6. I did some research and had a hard time finding anything about it. I talked to the Dr about it and he said that there should be more news coming down the pike shortly about how important B6 is in neurological health. He said it was fairly new research. He also said he didn't think it would "cure" my OT but it may help with some symptoms. By the way I took a blood test for B6 and my level is so low it didn't register. That makes me think it is worth trying.

i havent written on here for awhile as had lots going on. felt like i had to say something about this topic though as i came off all medication about 6 months ago after doing alot of my own research into vitamins and whether they might help. i have been taking 3 25 mg of vitamin D, 1 multi B vitamin (12 and 6) plus a general multi vitamin. ok i still shake but nothing like i used to.can walk a lot further and without a stick and can stand a bit longer before shakes kick in.also force myself to exercise even if it temporarily makes it worse. the rest of the time i eat lots of fruit and veg and rest when i need too. i feel heaps better than i did in sept 09 when diagnoised. hope this helps.
take care shakers and movers.

Good luck with the exercise regime, hope it works. I have also tried Clonazepam but gave it up because of the side effects. Gapapentin seems to work much better for me. I sympathise with your feelings on the general apathy from the medical profession. Having previously been mis-dagnosed with Benign essential tremor my GP prescribed B12 but they had no effect whatsoever. You just have to work out for yourself what works best for you.
Stay positive!
