Nordic Walking

Post by Johnny P »

Last week i had a trial lesson with nordic walking for half an hour and was surprised how relaxed i could walk compared to walking with a cane. Does anybody have any experience with this "sport" and its effects over longer time.

If you mean walking with two sets of "ski-poles" it is (of course) very common here (I live in Sweden). It is considered being a very efficient form of exersise as you are using your arms quite a lot. You also tend to walk much faster and "sportier" than when you are "just walking". They even call it "power-walk".

My neurologist say that walking is good so I continue do that on daily basis, usually with poles on weekends (if I'm not golfing which takes care of the daily walk) and without poles on my way to work.

Good luck!

Hi Johnny
I have found a tester session for Nordic Walking localy at the end tthis month, however after reading on the web , I am not sure i could do the warm up excercises as i am unable to stand at all at this stage. I have made contact and will give it some thought, i do walk each day , but I find the beach difficult perhaps poles may improve things..... if i dont feel a prat on my own ha ha ..... as it appears to be a selective sport in the north of England.and I am not in the youth age bracket
Kindest regards Maureen

gives some good tips on how to use the poles.

Maureen - I never do anything "special" before my walk. I just set out walking! Taking it easy at first, and then increasing tempo as I get warm. Don't forget to do some stretching when you get back though.
And if you happen to make people smile, take it as a bonus!

Best regards

Hi Johnny and Golfnut ,
thankyou for introducing me to Nordic Walking ....you will be pleased with me , I did a one to one with a nordic walker trainer, she was so considerate regarding my O T, I throughly enjoyed the hour she showed me the technique on a grass area, and then we went for a treck on a hard surface, followed by a walk on the beach.I found walking in this manner more relaxed and even at a steady pace (to suit me)very comfortable and did not feel worn out.
I have order a set of poles and will continue Nordic Walking,,,
P S, I did not feel a prat ,I enjoyed it.

happy days Maureen

Oh great - now that makes me feel like an idiot. I don't even know what it means to look hand knitted.

<scratches head> Wouldn't it be better to look hand knitted than machine knitted? I mean, it would look like somoeone took some effort with my appearance before letting me loose in the morning.

Hi Johnny,
I was looking back over old posts and saw that you said your OT came after a bad experience with an SSRI. Can I ask you about that? I am curious as this all came about after I had a bad experience with a medication. Thanks Johnny.
