Just playing catch up and a little story to go with it......
Since my last update in February 2007, I have improved my fitness out of sight...the tremors are here to stay and possibly even a bit worse, but hey! I am still upright and going strong...in fact once I started walking I went further and further... then I tried a little run as I was getting bored with the walking. Now I haven't run/walked in over 30 years before this year, so this is a biggie! I started 'running' about April because by this time I was up to walking at least 4 km a day. I mean walkers are passing me, so you will get the picture....
The big day came...cold windy and threatening rain as it had been the day before. There were at least 3,000 people who were doing this race and different catergories. I was in the 'older' run/walk catergory. When we were all at the start, I had to lean against a very unstable temporary fence ....I got to the stage of waiting where my feet became like concrete boots and when we were to go, I had to ask this younger lady to help me get started. She thought I was having a heart attack I think, but about 10 metres on , off I went on my own! To cut the rest of the story short, I 'ran' the first 11kms in 1.5 hours and walked the second (across farm fields and then a Lion's walk around the beach, into a strong head wind) in two hours. The last five km were not fun! dogged determination and pigheadedness won the day and I got there! Wow!
So it seems that perpetual motion helps in something like this, but it is the stopping and slowing down that really get us...I went out for a run two days later to stop the stiffness and just because I could!
I still go out but not quite as often as I damaged my hip crossing the fields, but enough to keep me fit and I try for at least 3-4 times a week.
I have yet to tell my surgeon, but I am sure he is going to be delighted when I present him with my certificate, because without him, I would not have been able to even walk again this far. He was with me every step of the way and it was a mantra...this is for you Tristan, this is for you!
Happiest of Christmases to you all and all the very best for the New Year.
Take care and God Bless
Elizabeth
