A little help needed

Post by MikeS »

Hi
Ive been on Gabapentin for a week now and my dose is now 900mg a day (1200 next dose)
I am having side effects of feeling very tired, confused then I feel ok for a few hours.I am having trouble concerntrating and can only drive at certain times.I seem to be able to stand a little longer but I dont feel as steady when Im walking.I am not asking my Specialist about this as he hasnt taken this medication. The only people that can tell if this passes are other members who have taken it.
Any advice anybody...because if this does not pass I think I would rather have my teddy bear legs back.
Thanks
Mike.

Mike: Everyone reacts to medications differently and the expectations of what they will do for us. All of the medications that are prescribed for us are sedative and we must learn to move our bodies quicker and walk at a fast pace. Sitting and waiting for the medication to make our OT symptoms go away completely is not going to happen. There is nothing on the market today that will do that. I have said this so many times, the "aspirin affect" is not applicable here for us. However, do speak to your doctor maybe he will suggest increasing it at a slower rate so your body will adjust slower. I have been using gabapentin for seven years and yes if I'm having a sedentary day I will feel sleepy too. However, the more active I am the better the day. Gloria

Mike - I love your 'teddy bear legs'. Yes, I'd rather continue have those than go about like a zombie.

Just discovered a tiny improvement. Might only apply to me, of course. I find if I stand on one leg, not both, the OT takes longer to 'come on'. Anyone else find this?

I expect I speak for all of us UK OTs in asking for as much feedback as you Rochester meeting people can give us. Good luck!!!!

Hi Richard,

Yes! I do find that I am more stable if I stand on one leg--(holding on to something of course--without leaning or touching something I cannot stand on one OR two legs.) Whenever I'm at a checkout counter, bank or whatever I always lean on the counter and stand on one leg. I was going to post about it but I thought it was something idiosyncratic or in my imagination. But one leg definitely feels more steady than two. Wonder what that's all about.

Good to hear you've experienced the one-leg effect, Harriet. It doesn't last too long, for me, probably because the leg I'm standing on declares it's had enough anyway. It is nevertheless definitely an improvement, however temporary, and I've reported it to my neurologist.

Meanwhile, do you think you Rochester-meeting-people could take this event with you? Perhaps someone will have some ideas that could be useful. ANY port in a storm.......
