Does anyone experience pain in their legs?

Post by Sue »

Does anyone experience a pain type sensation in their legs which feels like a weakness? I am wondering if this is associated with OT or something completely different. I would appreciate any comments on this.

Thanks

Sue,
It is actually a weakness, I believe, and as you clench your leg and back muscles to try to stand, they go into spasm. I have been working with a physical therapist and doing prolotherapy, both have helped to relax the muscles. There are also strengthening exercises you can do lying down and in a chair. Getting up out of a chair without holding on then sitting down, repeat as often as you can, is a good one. I coudn't do that at first but now can. As I strengthen by back, legs and ankles, I still get the tremor but it takes longer to come on and I can stand upright to sign credit cards or pay a bill now. Just being able to stop the downward course of this weird catacaclysmic event has been a huge boost to me. Oh, and I found I had been standing with my knees bent. Now I make a consious effort to find out which posture is the most effective. i.e. standing with my arms behind me seems to help balance. Hope this helps a bit.

I am still trying to find out more about all of this but when I walk too much or stand still I also get a sensation in my leg on the upper thigh. When I stand still it is worse especially after standing for a while. It seems to get weak and my knee feels like its going to give.

Pain in legs / Diminished reflexes

Post by DKMedic »

Yes, I too have pain in my legs, especially after I've done a lot of walking.
I have Essential Tremors as well, so I'm shakin' all the time. I use a cane
for support and to keep my balance when walking short distances, but my
neurologist ordered me a power wheelchair to use for times when more
walking is necessary. If I try to walk too much, my legs get heavy, and
I have to almost drag them along to walk. I tried a course of physical
therapy, but the therapist stopped the sessions before I'd completed my
treatment due to increased weakness and tremors in both my legs. My neurologist has noted that my reflexes in my legs are diminished, has anyone else found this to be the case in your circumstance?

Hope everyone has a Happy Easter! :D

 Hi, the more I use my legs to try and stand or the more I have to stand during the day the worse the muscles feel by the end of the day. The muscles hurt to pinch them. I think they are tight because I use them so much to try not to fall when I am standing still. I have flares somedays are worse then others.

Dear OT Friends:
Your input is very good, each one trying to describe this strange event that happens to our legs. After reading the many e-mails over the years I would like to add a few comments that might help all of us stay on the same page so we do not confuse other individual health issues with our OT. I feel the word pain is not what we are describing but rather stress and intense straining. True the muscles in our legs get abnormally hard
(this is one of the symptoms that neurologists look for in trying to diagnose OT). While this is occuring the stress of "standing still" gives way to the feeling of weakness and the inability to stand up straight and needless to say not at all. Also, those of you that are suffering with other health problems it is more difficult to keep the symptoms separate. Nonetheless this is important to do. Norak(Noni) the exercises that you are using are excellent because they are not exhausting classic "work-out" kinds that eventually intensify our tremors. Best to all, Gloria

I should have read all the postings about pain before writing today as then I would have realised other people have similar symptoms.
I am slowly working my way through the whole website thank you all so much and g'day porotin
I am experiencing pain of a neuralgic type caused by the muscular spasms which occur when I tense and strain to keep still.
