Arms and OT

Post by Louise H »

Hi!

My doctor told me arms are not affected by OT. But my arms shake any time I put pressure on them to pull something or hold a slightly heavy object. Does anyone else have this? Should I go back to him an ask about other possibilities?

Regards,

Louise

weight bearing conditions in legs and arms

Post by admin »

Hi Louise,

Below is a link to an article that investigated weight bearing conditions in both legs and arms, it may be of interest. In the research paper they mentioned the following:

"The diagnosis can be easily confirmed by EMG recordings from these muscles, which show a characteristic 13 Hz-18 Hz tremor. In severe cases this activity is apparent in all leg, trunk, and arm muscles."

I searched out a neurologist in movement disorders. He demonstrated to me how it is the weight bearing that is one factor which causes the tremor.(by the way i am putting his words more simply than what he actually said.) I will try to illustrate what happened.
I was told to stand in front of his desk. Extend my arms out and rest my hands on the desk. At the same time move my legs backwards untill all my weight was on my hands. My leg tremor stopped and the arms began.
He understood when i said this happens when i handwrite long passages in my journal and it seems to be because i put pressure on that hand as i write.
This sounds a little confusing but makes sense to me as before i would crawl on my knees to do the vacuuming but find if i sit upright on my knees the tremor starts and my trunk and arms begin to shake.
There is an article on this website about how it occurs on weight bearing and i think i read somewhere else that if we are totally suspended in water then we have no tremor eventhough we are upright. Perhaps we are the lost tribe of Atlantis!
This doctor also said the same as others that it is a rarely seen condition but at least he listened and we are investigating the disabling back pain i experience which i think is caused by trying to hold my back muscles to increase the time i can stand immobile
The Doctor said why not use a wheel chair in the classroom and then go walking about when i dont have to stand still for a task. This will be a huge confrontation for me and i have to really think about whether or not to do this as the doctor who suggested this said i will have to deal with the uneducated reactions like - whats wrong with her? she can walk! why does she need the chair to write on the blackboard and sit beside the pupils?!
Well i am trying the medication that many of you on the website are taking and seeing if the tremor improves then hopefully the back pain will subside. I will have to make my mind up about the chair when school begins in the new year. It will be a battle or i can just resign and try to retrain for office work. It would be so nice to go shopping on wheels and stop and look at the items and then roll along in theline at the cahier. BUT can you imagine the reaction of other people if they see you later taking a long uninterrupted walk ! It really is a bizarre condition.
One of my shopaholic daughers said "I told you so" to me as she suggested using the wheelchair when shopping a few years ago as she was so frustrated with me continually finding a seat or experiencing the tremor because she kept saying "look at this mum" and i couldnt stay still long enough for her to browse through the dresses.
I hope all of you who celebrate something this time of year have a happy time.
I do hope you know that i am only writing about my own experience and am not advocating what you need to do to cope with the OT.

Hi Louise, I know where you are coming from when you talk about shopping. I carry a three legged fold up stool to the supermarket, the tolley supports me but have to sit at times, so hence the stool. BUT just to do normal shopping I have SWOLLOWED MY PRIDE and now use a Wheely Walker and it is just wonderful. I can sit on it and check all the clothes, also you can speak to people nearly at eye level. I have also overcome the questions regarding the aids I use, I either smile or explain, depending on the mood I am in at the time. Go for the wheelchair if it makes life easier, as we need an easier life with this OT.
Lorna.
