Doses of Clonazepam

Post by nancyweeds »

I have had OT for 20 years and have recently found a Dr. that diagnosed it. I have been taking Clonazepam for all that time from the first Dr. Recently, I feel I am really shaky and have to be careful walking in the morning. So, when I wake up early (3, 4 or 5 a.m.), I take a pill (.5) and it has worked wonders. I also take another one around noon and sometimes later in the afternoon. My insurance company says you can order 40 per day! I would like to know what amount everyone else takes and how often.

I take Clonazepam too but am very leery of the dosage. It's a benzodiazapine and as such, can be addictive and hard to get off from. Also, the good effects tend to wear off and so you have to up your dose sometimes to keep the same effect. Also, it makes me a little spacey. All that being said, I'm taking about .5 each day. I recently cut back a bit and find that the tremors are worse, so I may up it again to .75. I don't know if I want to go much higher although I know a lot of people do. If you travel, be sure to keep several different supplies near as missing several doses can send you into a tail-spin. As my doctor said, if you're on it DO NOT RUN OUT OF IT! You have to go down very slowly.

I have been on Clonazepan for so long that I am probably "hooked", but I am 70 and don't care. I am trying to live as normal a live as I can and it does help. I have noticed if I am already having a panic attack or have other symptoms and take a pill, it seems to work the wrong way. So I just take it and keep finding chairs to sit in and walls to stand by. It is becoming more and more difficult to shop; I need a ride; so I shop on the internet. Thank you for answering!

I take 1 mg of Clonazepam at night. It helps greatly and takes about 80% of the tremor away, although I still can't climb a ladder, loathe free standing and find my back and legs are quite tight at the end of a day on my feet..

I was diagnosed in 1995 and have taken a variety of medications, but the one that I now take I and have been taking for many years now, is Clonazepam. Early on I took small does but as my tremors became worse the doctor upped the dose. Until several weeks ago, I was taking 6 mg/day. with my doctor's permission I am gradually increasing the dose until I reach 12 mg/daily. . Since my tremors start about 6 seconds after standing, I asked my neurologist if increasing the dose would give me a bit more standing time. I am now up to 10 mg/daily and it seems like my standing time and walking distance have improved. I have no side effects from the drug, other than perhaps nodding off in the PM when I am at home and unoccupied. After trying many drugs this seems to be (for me) the only drug that "takes the edge off". Has anyone else been on high doses of this drug??

This is Nancy again. Thanks for the replies! It has really helped. Since my first post my Dr. has found a "motion Dept." at the U of Arizona, and I am going to try to get in...I am going on a big trip to Africa, and don't want to spend all my standing time on the ground! I did buy a really good 3 legged stool....but still feel wobbly on it and probably won't take it with on the trip. The good part is that most of this trip will be in a vehicle viewing animals, etc. However, I want many other trips, so hope I can up my Clonazepam like someone has done and it works.

Hello Nancy: It seems you are doing all good things ! Your trip to Africa sounds great and look forward to a report from you when you return. You say that you find the cane chair wobbly . I'm wondering if you were not told how to sit on it. When I first got mine many years ago I sat on it wrong, in a lady like way, with the handle to the back instead of straddling it with the handle between the legs and it was very wobbly. I finally figured out I was sitting on it wrong !!!!!!!! Regardless, it only has 3 legs so we must be certain the legs are steady on the ground before sitting. I'm pleased your Dr. found a place that has a Movement Disorder Center for you and suggest that when you call for an appointment you request to see a neurologist that knows about OT. Enjoy, Gloria

Thank you, Gloria! Nice to hear from you. Re: my 3 legged chair - it seems the rubber on the bottom of legs do not go flat; however, have not tried it outside. I don't have a back on it...wish I did! Nancy

I was taking a high dose of clonazepam and my dr wanted to lower it. I now take 1mg in the a.m. with 50mg of topomax. I take .5 clonazepam at noon and again at dinner. At bedtime I take another 1 mg of clonazapam and 25 mg of topomax. Together the pills seem to do the trick and I do feel good.

Hi, I need some advice from anyone who knows more about clonazepam than I do. Have been taking it for six yrs. since diagnosis, high doses to start & gradually reduced, since the side effects were way to much to handle. The past yr. I am at .50 mg. per day. I'm not sure if I am suffering withdrawl effects, since this drug is so addictive, but am overheating & perspiring heavily, also heart racing wildly, just doing minor tasks. I really want to try the no drug route for a while & see what happens. Tremors have moved to hands & arms in the past yr. standing time nil, but leg tremors no worse. At this point I do not know what to do, up the med. again or ride it out. I would be willing to try something less addicting at some point. Any advice you have would be appreciated.
Thanks

Foster: Sorry to hear you are having difficulties with your dosages of Clonazepam. I think it would be wise if you consulted with your doctor about your usage of it plus the physical symptoms you are experiencing at this time. Please let us know if you find the reason that is causing your situation at the present. Gloria

Hi Gloria, thanks for your reply, nice to hear from you. I did go to see the original Neurologist who diagnosed me in 06 a few years ago to see if we could try some other med. As I felt the clonazepam was doing no good. He said that was the only medication that would work, which we know is not so. As mentioned I slowly decreased dosage as he said to do. I'm sure I just did it to fast for me anyway, & the result is what I'm dealing with now, I think for now I will just up the dose slightly & see what happens. I know I have a bad habit of overextending myself, hubby is forever telling me to slow down...(you tell us the same thing Gloria). I discovered there is a motion disorder clinic here & will get a referral, it takes six months to get in. In the meantime we are heading south to our Palm Springs home till Apr. we have already had snow here in Alberta, so look forward to the heat of Calif. & desert gardening!!! How lucky am I to garden all year, except for the cute wild little bunnies that like to eat my flowers.....
Take Care & thanks again Gloria.

Esteban: Thanks for reporting your experience with Clonazepam. It seems to be the first one that is prescribed by most neurologist and it does work for some OT people ....... it did not work for me as I have noted before. I hope all will continue to report in about what they are taking and the results. . I have been on Gabapentin for years and it has helped me without side affects however I have found at the late stages of OT that I'm at now I must take it more often . Gloria
