Neurological Physiotherapy

Post by gardenwoman »

Hello everyone, Sorry its been such a long time. The OT is getting worse for me and I am wondering what to do next. Has anyone here had help from a Neuro Physiotherapist? There is a group nearby that specialises in this, and I know they do a lot with people who have Multiple Sclerosis - I guess its unlikely that they have come across OT.
With very best wishes to you all.

Gardenwoman: I'm sorry I have not heard about Neurological Physiotherapy for OT. Perhaps you can ask them if they know about OT and would this Physiotherapy be of some help for you. Please keep us posted, Gloria

Hi Gardenwoman. After reading your post I looked up neurological physiotherapy and found that there are hospitals in Ireland (where I live) that are involved with it. I will now contact them and see if they have any knowledge of OT and find out if it's worth a visit. If so I will put my hand in my pocket (nothing's free in Ireland) and give it a try. If you hear any more let me know. I will keep you informed as to my progress with my enquiry.
Keep positive.

HI Quite some time since i posted
I tried a visit to a Neuro Physio. The experience left me trembling and annoyed at his ignorance of our condition .He insisted it was in my mind and that I should have an appointment with a physiologist.
He insisted I stand away from the chair and continue to stand still ...of course I had to sit down I felt so shaky.
"If only he could have it for one day !!!!!"

On seeing my Consultant Neurologist he was amazed and said I defiantly had Primary orthostatic Tremmor.I have also been seen by a second Neurologist who was interested in our condition

Trust you see somebody with understanding and compassion for our poor quality of life Best wishes
Maureen. Keep smiling...

That's one of the main problems with our condition - no one can see it or know what it feels like if they don't experience it themselves. I find that even those I tell, can forget. I really is disabling and made worse by the fact that there is such lack of belief/understanding. Maybe we should try to get more media coverage for it. I think that journalists might be interested because its so rare and strange, though I am not too sure about
putting myself out there
. I think it would depend on the type of coverage and my trust in the interviewer.

Building awareness is key towards helping others understand. Below are a couple examples of how people have been able to spread the word, but there needs to be more. Everyone has the ability to contribute to this process.

This past year Adrian was successful in posting a very informative story to his local newspaper - Link to Article

An excellent radio broadcast that was hosted on CBC radio: LINK

Mike was successful in submitting the September OT Awareness Month article written by Pat in the Euro Weekly News: Link . Mike was also interviewed by Radio Europe but I believe that link has expired.

These are just a few of the successful publications to build OT awareness. Be creative and look for opportunities.
