Three people have had positive results with prisms.

Post by Janevece »

There are now THREE people who have had a decrease in their OT symptoms with prism glasses. HOW EXCITING! I am so happy to hear this and hope others will consider trying this form of treatment.
Jane Vece (me), Nancy and Linda have all had positive results. You can see the posts on page three of "Eye Related Movement Disorder" on the forum page.

I received my new prism glasses from Dr William Padula in October of 2013 with COMPLETE relief of tremor, fatigue and cognitive disabilities.
The symptoms slowly returned to a lesser degree around the end of December 2013. We have tried different prescriptions over the year with only short term tremor relief.

Since returning from Omaha, I have been working with Dr Padula receiving vision therapy in addition to wearing my glasses. My severe fatigue, cognition and tremor have all improved. I have days that I am completely tremor free again. I have such hope that we are on the right track.

Dr Padula is a clinician and researcher who has worked with patients who have had traumatic brain injuries, strokes, MS, and other neurological disorders. He is in Guilford, Ct.
I like to say that he treats the brain through the eyes.

Congratulations to Linda. Please keep us posted on your progress.

Hi Jane. Hope you are well. I've been following your progress on the forum and must say I am very pleased to hear of your success with the use of prisms. I have been trying follow your example and I have been to to the National Optometrist Center in Dublin. As a result I have prisms in my glasses for the last week or so. At the moment there is no change to my condition and I am not sure of my next move. I think a return visit to Dublin is on the cards.
Out of interest, I was wondering how you are progressing after the initial success. Has Dr Padula shown any interest in helping others in the form of a paper etc. All I have at the moment is what you have kindly put on the forum.I feel I could do with more info when dealing with doctors.
Best wish and continued success.

Hello everyone,
I have been waiting until I had some information to share with you about my experience with looking into getting prism glasses. As I have discovered, it is a learning experience for myself and my optomotrist.

I am seeing my optomotrist as I do not have a specialist within a reasonable distance and he is very willing to try and help.

There are a few things that are important to know before you try prisms and I wanted to share that with you so you will avoid delays that I had to experience because of lack of knowledge:

1. Prisms have to be the same for each eye. Prisms are is an added prescription to your existing prescription.

2. The glasses with the prisms have to be worn constantly for awhile (unknown on time as that varies) to see if it will work.

I will tell you a bit about what I experienced. I knew that 3 people had had success with prisms:

-Nancy had esophoria (eye turns in) and she was prescribed prisms and it was very successful

-Linda had exophoria (eye turns out) and she was prescribed prisms with much success.

-Jane - not sure of her eye problem but she had much success as you know.

I told my optomotrist about these ladies and he tested my eyes for any problems. I felt that even if I didn't have an eye problem I could try prisms. The first test he did not find any problems. In the meantime I was testing out prism glasses but we had put a different prism in each eye as we did not realize they had to be the same.

I returned as I really wanted to try a "10 prism" for each eye as Nancy noticed immediately when putting them on that her tremors had disappeared. I had no such luck but was not giving up.

The optomotrist checked my eyes again and did notice that I did have one issue with one eye - it had a slow recovery rate when he have it a "horizontal phoria" test. That means that when I was looking to the side with one eye it took an abnormal time to come back to center - whatever that means. He did not notice that the first time he tested.

Neither of us have any idea if that is an issue. What he going to do is make me some prism glasses with a "3 prism" in each eye and he is going to put it "Base Out" (BO)
Prisms are put into the lens either - Base Out, Base In, Base Up or Base down depending on the problem.

Of course it will be all experimental but I feel it is definitely worth trying. I will wear the glasses for a few months constantly and if I do not notice anything we will try and higher prism - probably a "5 prism" in each eye.

I will report back what my findings are but I would definitely encourage everyone to be checking this out and reporting back.

Hello all,

It has been some time since I have posted anything; not since last year.

I have a question, perhaps it has been asked and answered and I missed it.

My question is: Do prism glasses work for people who have trifocals?

Thanks,
Betty

Yes Betty, prism works with trifocals. I have the prism added to my regular prescription of trifocals. My one eye wants to turn toward the inside. Therefore the prism thickness is on the outside of my lens (Base Out) to draw my eye toward the center of the lens.

How this corrects OT is a big mystery, even to my eye Dr. But it’s wonderful.

Betty,
I also wear trifocals. My prisms are added on the inside (Base In) because my eye turns out.

Hello Nancy,

Thanks for the quick response. Weren't you with Jane in Omaha giving the talk on prisms? I was there as well. It was very interesting.

I don't have any problems with my eyes other than the need for correction. It's time for me to have my eyes checked, so I will try to find someone who knows something about prisms. To be steady again would be wonderful; even for only a few minutes. At this point, I have NO steady standing time.

Hello Linda,

Thanks for your response as well. As I indicated to Nancy, the only problem I have with my eyes is the need for correction; no problems with eyes turning in or out.

Now to find someone in my area to "fix" the problem.

Betty,
I did not realize I had the problem with my eye either. The reason they found mine was because I went to the same doctor as Nancy. They knew what to look for. It took him quite a while to find the problem. He said he just barely caught it. I think it is difficult to detect and unless they are looking for it, maybe it can be missed.

Good Luck,
Linda

Thanks for the information, Linda. I guess one must find a really good doctor in order to get the best results. At this point, I must begin searching for someone familiar with prisms.

I'll let you know how things work out.

Thanks,
Betty

Hi!all: This is very exciting and I hope as many people as possible with OT will join in the trial of prism glasses. As I have said before I have been suffering with Epiphora (watering eye) and I'm scheduled for a procedure at the first of the month that hopefully will cure it. After the " waterfall" is stopped I know of a opotomotrist that works with prisms in a nearby town and intent to go there to see about prisms for myself. I don't know if I will be a candidate for prisms because I only use glasses for reading however I feel it is important that we all try. Any kind of relief that prisms can give is worth it as well as any connecting information it might gather with OT. Let's give it a try! Gloria

I had a follow up exam with Dr. Skelsey last week. He seems to be very interested in helping Linda and I with prism glasses. He would like to see others in the Kansas City area with OT. He also said that he would like to document prism glasses /OT and share the knowledge with colleagues. This is exciting.

Dr. Skelsey is an ophthalmologist and partners with Silverstein Eye Centers, Independence, Missouri.

Hi Dottiesport,

I believe you will find what you are looking for on another site. (Give prisms, vision therapy a shot). The latest posts are there. Hope these will be helpful to you.

The glasses have been very helpful to me.
